Most airports lose their rail link at midnight. Copenhagen does not: the driverless M2 metro runs from Lufthavnen station, two minutes from Terminal 3, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The service, in numbers

Trains run every 4 to 6 minutes through the day and evening. Between about 1:00 am and 7:00 am the interval stretches to roughly 20 minutes on most nights, tightening to about 8 minutes on the nights after Friday and Saturday. Note the split at CPH: the metro (M2) and the trains are different systems from different platforms. Regional and Øresund trains under Terminal 3 reach Copenhagen Central Station in about 13 minutes and serve Ørestad and Malmö; the M2 serves Christianshavn and the city core. Both run from the same complex under and beside Terminal 3.

What 24-hour service means for early flights

At most airports, a 6:00 am departure forces either an airport hotel or a painful taxi. At CPH, the metro delivers you from the city centre to the terminal at 4:00 am for the price of a normal ticket. The calculation that remains is comfort: a night shortened to four hours in a city hotel, against a full night at the Clarion or Comfort Hotel where the terminal is a short walk and the alarm can ring later. For departures before about 7:00 am, count backwards with the night interval of 20 minutes rather than the daytime one.
